Surya Kriya — The original solar sequence
A breath-synchronised sequence of exacting bodily geometry: the complete, original form, of which the sun salutation many people know is a simplification.
What it is
“Surya” means the sun; a kriya is a structured technique that combines breath, posture and attention — an inner action. In the tradition, Surya Kriya belongs to a family of practices for aligning with the sun, understood as a source of energy. The sun is there in the very name of Hatha Yoga, too: “ha”, the sun, and “tha”, the moon — two poles, activation and calming, which Hatha Yoga seeks to balance.
Surya Namaskar, the well-known sun salutation, is a simplified, more accessible version of Surya Kriya, geared towards physical fitness and cardiovascular work, with an inner dimension. Surya Shakti, another variant, is the most physical of the three, aimed at strength. Surya Kriya is the original form, more precise and more complete: the one in which the inner dimension — energy — is most pronounced.
What sets it apart is exactness: a sequence coordinated with the breath and performed to a bodily geometry of great precision. Like every practice at the studio, it is taught as it was designed — its sequence, its pace, its geometry, its link to the breath — without blending or simplifying; that exactness is what makes it work.
What it asks of you
- Experience
- None is assumed: you come to it after the introductory session of Upa Yoga.
- Stomach
- Empty: digestion gets in the way of the practice.
- A teacher
- For the full form: a video cannot see you.
- Regularity
- It counts for more than length: a few minutes every day do more than a long session now and then.
- Belief
- None: you practise, observe what the sequence produces, and judge for yourself.
This page does not describe the sequence, and that is deliberate: it is transmitted in person, because its geometry is subtle.
What practitioners report
Those who practise Surya Kriya report more regular internal rhythms, easing tension and stress, and steadier energy.
What we would call stress, tension or wear, the tradition calls “friction”. Practitioners describe exactly that: less inner friction, a physical and mental stability that holds, and a new distance from certain repetitive patterns. These are reported experiences, not a promise.
We present these practices as tools for prevention and wellbeing — not as medical treatment.
Starting at the studio
Surya Kriya is not learnt from a book or a screen. At the studio, in Paris 5e, you begin with an introductory session of Upa Yoga; the full sequence is then transmitted by a teacher over a short programme, and corrected until you can practise it on your own, at home. That is the aim of the transmission: that one day you no longer need us.
The path
- Begin where you are. An introductory session of Upa Yoga. You need no flexibility, no equipment and no belief — only an empty stomach and an hour.
- Learn it properly, in person. The full form is transmitted by a teacher over a short programme. The geometry is subtle; learnt from a book or a screen, a small error becomes a habit.
- Practise for one mandala. A cycle of forty to forty-eight consecutive days — about the time a new alignment needs to settle into the body. This is where the reported changes appear.
- Go further, or simply keep up the practice. Deeper practices, silent intensives, or the Agora — where the same attention is turned outward, onto questions no one can answer alone.
