Upa Yoga — Activation, for anyone
Simple movements that wake the joints and restore circulation, with no prior condition required. Upa Yoga is the starting point of classical yoga: everyone begins with it.
What it is
The word “upa” means “under” or “semi”: Upa Yoga is a pre-yoga, a way in, and one of the five practices of classical Hatha Yoga that we teach. Its movements mobilise and lubricate the joints and revive the flow of vitality through the body — everything a day spent sitting has set stiff.
Upa Yoga assumes nothing you do not already have: no flexibility, no fitness, no experience. That is what makes it the honest place to begin. The body is the most tangible part of the system, the part that answers at once; what you can do with it, you can feel immediately. The body is not an object to improve, but the ground that carries you. So you start from where you are, not from a level you would first have to reach.
It is for anyone who wants the physical and mental benefits of yoga without committing to a deep spiritual pursuit; once learnt, it can be practised at home or at the office. If you want to go further, it prepares you for more demanding practices such as Angamardana or Surya Kriya. Throughout the method, working the body is not an end in itself: it is the doorway, not the room.
What it asks of you
- Fitness
- None: Upa Yoga assumes neither flexibility nor prior training.
- Experience
- None is assumed; you begin where you are.
- Equipment
- None is needed.
- Stomach
- Empty: digestion gets in the way of the practice and of the body’s comfort.
- Time
- An hour for the introductory session.
- Belief
- None: what we transmit are methods, and you check them for yourself.
The method does not ask you to have flexibility, rest or time to begin with: it begins where you are.
What practitioners report
What people who practise Upa Yoga describe first is a body waking up: freer joints, stiffness loosening, vigour returning. They also find that it prepares them for everything that follows.
As with the whole method, the first result is often that you notice: when the shoulders rise or the jaw tightens, you catch it sooner. These are reported experiences, not promises; each person checks them for themselves.
We present these practices as tools for prevention and wellbeing — not as medical treatment.
Starting at the studio
At the studio, 50 rue de la Clef, place Monge, everyone begins with an introductory session of Upa Yoga, whatever practice has brought them there: this session opens the way to all the other practices.
The path
- Begin where you are. An introductory session of Upa Yoga. You need no flexibility, no equipment and no belief — only an empty stomach and an hour.
- Learn it properly, in person. The full form is transmitted by a teacher over a short programme. The geometry is subtle; learnt from a book or a screen, a small error becomes a habit.
- Practise for one mandala. A cycle of forty to forty-eight consecutive days — about the time a new alignment needs to settle into the body. This is where the reported changes appear.
- Go further, or simply keep up the practice. Deeper practices, silent intensives, or the Agora — where the same attention is turned outward, onto questions no one can answer alone.
